Deadbolt Installation for NYC Apartments and Brownstones
Most NYC apartment doors fall into one of two categories: those with a standard cylindrical bore ready for a single-cylinder deadbolt, and those with a full mortise lock pocket already routed into the edge of the door. Brownstones and pre-war buildings almost universally use the mortise lock format — a rectangular steel case that slides into the door's edge and provides both the latch and the deadbolt throw in a single unit. Our technicians work with both setups daily. For standard bore doors, we install quality single-cylinder and double-cylinder deadbolts from trusted hardware lines including Schlage and Kwikset. For doors with existing mortise cutouts, we source the right replacement mortise lock body, rekey it to your new keys, and test the throw alignment before we leave.
One of the most requested upgrades we handle in NYC buildings is the jimmy proof deadbolt installation. Unlike a standard deadbolt that throws a bolt horizontally into a strike plate, a jimmy proof deadbolt — also called a rim lock or vertical deadbolt — mounts on the surface of the door and interlocks with a strike plate mounted to the door frame. The interlocking design makes it extremely resistant to the door-spreading pry attacks that are a real concern in older NYC buildings with softer wood door frames. We install these regularly on apartment doors throughout Manhattan and the outer boroughs, and they are fully NYC Housing Maintenance Code compliant.
